Our customers

Trustworthy sustainability insights based on science

Infine Sustainability Data Service creates unique sustainability insights based on academically validated scientific knowledge and globally trusted 3rd party sustainability data sources.

Our sustainability analysis is based on scientific understanding and the framework for assessing product sustainability used by the Sustainability Panel. The panel members are leading experts on sustainable business and production in Finland. They have conducted expert analyses on more than 500 products - by modelling these analyses we have created an automation based on a broad scientific understanding of environmental, social and economic responsibility and sustainability science. It is based on a framework of relative sustainability, life-cycle thinking, stakeholder theory and socio-ecological systems to provide a comprehensive and systematic approach to business sustainability.

Trusted 3rd party sustainability data sources

The sustainability analysis is based on numerous and up-to-date 3rd party databases covering multiple angles of sustainability from workers’ rights to land use. The sources include highly renowned and globally trusted organisations like the World Bank, Transparency International, WWF, UNICEF, EU & Government publications and dozens of peer-reviewed articles.

The underlying raw product data for the sustainability analysis we primarily get from the industry-standard GS1 product database. We can also integrate structural data from other sources for enhanced and extended data coverage.

Each data point in the sustainability analysis can be traced back to the sustainability data set and scientific reasoning, making it suitable for e.g. CSRD reporting or Green Claims compliant marketing.

Our 9 dimensions cover the whole spectrum of product sustainability

Our software takes into account that sustainability is a complex and systemic issue by addressing product sustainability through nine dimensions. These dimensions include various aspects of ecological and social sustainability, including:

The Human Rights dimension analyses measure taken to ensure human rights throughout the value chain. It helps to identify and prevent the exploitation of forced and child labour and other human rights violations according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Decent Work dimension analyses measures taken to ensure the well-being and collective rights of all workers in the value chain. It helps to achieve and exceed the ILO Labour Standards.

The Environment dimension analyses products’ impact on the environment at different life cycle stages. It helps to reduce the spoiling of the environment and to increase environmental protection throughout the production chain.

The Water dimension analyses measures taken to reduce water use and prevent adverse effects on the water ecosystems in the production chain. It helps to ensure the sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources.

The biodiversity dimension analyses products’ impact on biodiversity in its different life cycle stages. It helps to slow down biodiversity loss and to increase biodiversity where possible throughout the production chain.

The Climate Change dimension analyses products’ impact on climate change in its life cycle stages. It helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to increase carbon sequestration throughout the production chain.

The Circular Economy dimension analyses measures contributing to the transition towards the circular economy. It helps to reduce the use of virgin materials.

The Good Business Ethics dimension analyses the transparency of operations and production chains according to the principles of good business ethics. It helps to increase transparency and ensure responsible practices throughout the production chain of a product.

The Sustainable Consumer dimension analyses measures taken to support and enable sustainable lifestyles for consumers. It helps to provide necessary product information for consumers to make sustainable decisions whether they are choosing, using or disposing of the product.

Sustainability classifications

Our analysis uses a traffic light system to break down and visualise the results. The seven classes of the evaluation presents the product features based on their level of sustainability and availability of information:

A feature of a product which is currently at a competitive level regarding sustainability. Exceeds the average level of sustainability in that particular feature.

A feature of the product that represents a basic level of sustainability, for example, by meeting minimum legal requirements and reducing harm at some stage of the product's life cycle. These characteristics do not yet differ from the general level in such a way that they could be considered competitive factors.

A feature of the product that can be improved in terms of sustainability. The suggestions for improvement are general, i.e. the measures identified are not necessarily applicable to all product categories.

A feature of the product that may include a sustainability issue or risk.

Critical missing information, without which a comprehensive analysis of the product's sustainability cannot be provided. Includes product information that is essential for sustainability and should be obtained for the sake of transparency.

Non-critical missing information, the absence of which is worth noting and which may be needed for future sustainability work.

A feature of the product that is not currently labelled as a sustainability feature or that cannot be analysed based on available data.

Our approach

Through the years, we have developed a unique approach to product sustainability, allowing us to provide companies with automated, science-based sustainability insights covering various different environmental and social issues.

Fully automated, science-based smart-tech solution to make your business sustainability management easy and efficient.

Infine Sustainability Data Service:

  • Enables automated product sustainability analysis based on GS1 Synkka database
  • Provides real-time overview on product sustainability
  • Enriches the sustainability parameter data so that it can give procurement suggestions
  • Spots critical missing data before the risks have impact on business.

Infine Sustainability Data Service does not have a black box, meaning that all recommendations and observations can be tracked to the used science-based evaluation rules.

The core of our methodology is an expert-based product evaluation model developed by our independent Sustainability Panel of leading experts.

The model is not based on any sole current standard, guidance, or methodology. It is based on scientific knowledge from multiple disciplines pertaining to environmental, social, and economic sustainability/sustainability science.

If you want to learn more about our methodologies, book an appointment.

Our analyses are made based on existing product information. The analysis can be performed automatically based on, for instance, the GS1 database, or semi-automatically based on information provided by companies or available from public sources.

We are continuously developing our data model for both automated and semi-automated product data reading, and improving data ingestion from different data sources.

The sustainability data we use to enrich product data is collected from several sources. Sources include quantitative and qualitative data from eg. peer-reviewed articles, governmental publications, NGO research, industry studies, open databases, and trusted certifications. The data and sources are continuously updated and new ones are added. Each source is assessed for its integrity by our sustainability experts before it is added to our system. All the analysis points can be back traced to their sources due to our system which is a rule-based expert system.

Data maturity means how comprehensively the available data matches the total amount of product data Infine Sustainability Data Service uses to analyse product sustainability. For instance, the GS1 Synkka database can offer up to approximately 85 % data maturity, while using a combination of different sources, data maturity can be even higher.

The higher the maturity level, the more accurately we can analyse the actual sustainability features of the products. If data is missing, Infine Sustainability Data Service analyses whether the missing data is critical or non-critical.

Our analysis is based on the idea of relative sustainability. This means that sustainability of a particular product is evaluated against the current level of sustainability in the same product category.

From a consumer's point of view, relative sustainability means that among the available options, the sustainable choice is a product or service that allows us to meet a particular need in a more sustainable way.
